I really shouldn't be surprised when someone who claims to be above "doctrinaire ideology" gets important information wrong about various ideologies.
Willful ignorance is still ignorance, after all, and knee-jerk "anti-ideological" thinking tends to manifest as willful ignorance of some school of thought or another.

either us queer boys are extra insecure, or we just show it more than other people. someday i'll go a week without a gay friend of mine telling me his dating woes with a kind of "MAKE ME FEEL BETTER NOW!" subtext.
ah, well. at least now i have guy friends :)

quick trip to DE for a family party [Dec. 13th, 2009|12:34 am]
[Tags|]

Sitting in the den, listening to my family members recount my uncle's funeral, ghost experiences, death-related dreams... I always like being present for the more private side of my family.

We had a big, big party today, pre-Christmas: probably about 50 guests or so, throughout the evening. My folks' house was really really full of relatives, family friends, and food (especially cheese). Lots of fun, good chats with my second cousins (who are all twenty to thirty years older than me), and a chance to catch up with my first cousin, once removed (who is AWESOME).

Good stuff. I'm glad I came.

How I Met Your Mother puts the comedy back in stalking!
It makes me a little sick.
Seriously, I've had a few friends deal with stalkers before, and that shit is creepy, not fucking funny.

EDIT: When is Marshall going to get arrested, already?

Also - his ex's new boyfriend turns out to be an "identity thief". Yeah, let's justify violent, antagonistic behavior against any and all comers!

The new book [Nov. 9th, 2009|01:17 am]

I sent Canon Fodder off to Tor again; it's been two years, and I'm ready to give it another go.
For several months now, I've been working on the sequel, Underground Movements, and I'd been building up to having one of the main characters come out of the closet.

I wrote that scene on the train, coming up to Delaware for the weekend.

What's really weird is that I feel very self-conscious about having written this scene. I have lots of internal, negative voices chastising me for how it's "not credible" or "breaks character" or suchlike. It's very credible; I made a point of ratcheting up the yes-he-is-queer internal monologue in UM, just to make sure. In the previous book, I imagine it's one of those things where you have to a) know what you're looking for or b) enjoy slash fiction (look it up, if you need to ^_^) to catch the rather subtle references, if I do say so myself.

Re-reading CF would probably count as option "C".

In any case, it was a lot of fun to write, a lot of fun to contemplate writing, and I was going to get around to quite a bit of queerness in this series sooner or later. I'm thinking I should send it to someone and have them take a look at it; the only trouble is that there's some context and build-up (you know, build-up of fandom) that may be needed to appreciate the scene the way I or a loyal reader would. Maybe not - if any of you are interested in helpin' a brother writer out, please let me know!

I'm kind of losing my shit over this, just a little bit. It's one of those moments where I do something a little daring as a writer, and the risk of "alienating" homophobic or otherwise squeamish/squidgy readers hangs over my like a great big boulder on a string. There's an image.

Halp!

obama continues bush-era legacy of strongarming british intelligence [Oct. 18th, 2009|10:27 am]

http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2009/10/17/mohamed/index.html?source=newsletter - in which hillary clinton personally threatens the british intelligence agency not to release reports of the CIA actually torturing people (think "scalpel to the groin"), and obama's administration continues to threaten witholding information if said reports were made public, a bush administration tactic carried over into the new term.

John McCain is hilarious:

At the GOP press conference, defeated presidential candidate Sen. John McCain (R) of Arizona said that the health bill would add another $1 trillion on top of the debt already accumulated in the fight against the recession.

That would be an act of “generational theft,” said Senator McCain, in that it would burden future taxpayers.

“Elections have consequences,” he said. “This is a glaring example of that.”

Good times. I know I'm cherry-picking, but his logic here is.. elections = bad? Sighhhh.
